A prospective client contacted me with major concerns about the way their hand painted kitchen had been left by the kitchen cabinet painter.
It was very obvious from the photos that something was wrong so I decided to go and see it for myself. I was horrified, it was the worst case of a hand painted kitchen I had ever seen. There were lots of runs, orange peel from rolling and no prep. The backs of some drawers had been missed altogether. The client was quoted 3 coats of paint in a semi matt finish and all they got was one coat of paint in a semi gloss finish. The client was worried that their kitchen had been ruined so I asked if I could take a small door away to fix. It was important to me that the client was reassured that her kitchen would be done properly.
At this point I didn’t even have the job but considering the circumstances whats a couple of trips and a tin of paint!
On my return with the repainted door the client agreed for me to go ahead.

On the job:
- All surfaces were protected with proplex sheeting and lining paper.
- Then the entire kitchen is dismantled; door furniture and doors were removed.
- The kitchen had been painted with a roller so the whole lot had to be sanded back to the primer. This would give the best results for the primer and finish coats.
- I applied a coat of Tikkurila Otex to ensure good paint adhesion to the freshly prepared kitchen.
- Two coats of Semi matt paint mixed to a colour that is close to F&B Ammonite were applied with a good de-nib and tack off between coats.
- Once the paint had fully dried the doors and drawers were refitted and aligned.
- I also changed all the hinge screws and plinth clips due to them being rounded off or broken. Kitchen cabinet painter Effingham Surrey

Degree’s of error
There can always be degree of error in any hand painted kitchen. These kitchens are not finished in a factory by a machine. They are completed insitu by the human hand. If you put a good quality camera up close to any surface you can find error, but what we have seen on this particular project was not just the odd error. The person did go back to try and rectify but it is clear that the damage was already beyond a touch up! We do not know who painted this kitchen, but we were informed that the client would be taking legal action.
Basic procedures were just not carried out. Thankfully though, this kitchen was not beyond Dan Kelly. The pictures show the level of skill and detail required to turn projects like this around week in week out.
