Hand painted kitchen High Wycombe Buckinghamshire. We were recommended to paint a kitchen by friends of clients who’s kitchen we had painted a couple of months earlier. Once the clients had seen the work we had undertaken for their friends. We were commissioned to paint their kitchen in High Wycombe.

The lacquered pine kitchen was in very good condition but looked dark and dated. The clients had just had a new kitchen fitted in their home in Spain and knew how expensive and messy it can be to replace one. Having seen the transformation of their friend’s kitchen, they decided that painting would be the way forward.

As with all kitchens we paint, we fully protected all surfaces that are not being painted. Many painters don’t spend the time doing this which doesn’t give a professional working environment.

As this kitchen had lay on doors, we decided to label and remove them and take them back to our workshop.

The next stage, which I think is one of the most important stages, is the preparation of the kitchen. Each kitchen we work on is fully degreased and sanded using a dust free sanding system. This is so important but there are kitchen painters that consider a quick wipe over and a light de-nib is all a kitchen needs. This is great for the painter as it can save them a couple of days of hard work but for the client’s kitchen, this does not give the best foundation for any painting that follows.

Which paints to use for kitchen painting?

For this kitchen we decided that Isofix, a shellac based primer, would be the best paint to use as this seals any knots and stops tanning and once primed, you can then see any dents or holes that need filling. We use a combination of two pack and fine surface fillers to fill any defects.

Painting kitchen units

With all painting you have to have a degree of patience and this is more so when allowing the correct drying times to lapse before re-coating. This is one of the biggest mistakes an amateur and some professionals make when trying to rush a job. Each layer of paint needs the correct drying time to allow any solvents to evaporate. Even with waterborne paint, this can take up to 16 hours.

The top coats we used for this kitchen were Feelings Furniture Paint and once all the painting was completed, the kitchen was put back together and cleaned. All that was left to do was the decoration of the rest of the room by the client’s decorators. Also to choose and fit new handles.
